Star Wars Battlefront 2 Microtransaction Prices Revealed

It's not good.

Any excitement people may have had for Star Wars Battlefront 2 has been dampened significantly by the news that the game would effectively be pay-to-win: loot boxes that can be earned in-game (but are much easier and faster to get through a quick cash injection) contain gameplay-altering content that can give players a huge edge and while EA has toned it down somewhat since the system was first announced, they havent dialed it back enough: the game, which is currently in beta, is still blatantly pay-to-win.

And now, EA has revealed just how much youll have to pay in order to accomplish that.

Loot chests can be purchased with a premium in-game currency called Crystals (whoever decided to name it that instead of Midi-chlorians made a mistake), with each chest ranging from anywhere between 100 crystals to 4000, depending on the quality of the box and what kind of box youre purchasing (Hero, Starfighter, and Trooper, which each contain unique loot). So with that kind of price range, what kind of money do you have to throw down?

Heres the list of crystal prices:
  • 500: $5/£4
  • 1000: $10/£8
  • 2100: $20/£16
  • 4400: $40/£32
  • 12,000: $100/£80
So yeah, for $5, you could order five of the very cheapest hero boxes or two low-tier trooper crates and a hero crate. But if you want the best of the best, youd have to dish out 100 bucks for three (count em: THREE) top-quality trooper boxes.

That's, uh, thats not ok.

Now, the changes that EA had said were coming to the system havent been implemented yet, so its possible that it wont be so bad in the near future, but even with that system, itd still be really easy to skip a whole bunch of grind and get the best stuff in the game if youre willing to dish out for it, which means this game is still absolutely pay-to-win.

Hopefully, people dont sink into the trap; itll just set us all back even further.
