Star Citizen's Star Marine Expected "3, 4, Maybe 5 Weeks" From Now

At least it won't be years from now.

Not long ago, it was announced that Star Citizen had delayed its FPS Star Marine mode indefinitely--by indefinitely, the developers meant a few weeks.

Now today, the director and founder of Star Citizen, Chris Roberts, clarified in an interview with Gamers Nexus that the FPS module is expected to release in "3, 4, maybe 5 weeks." Roberts also delves into the difficulties of Star Marine, stating that the module is more complex technologically speaking than a typical FPS. For instance, in terms of viewpoints:

"The arms are [normally] right in front of the eyes. With Star Citizen, it's different than a normal FPS because it's essentially a whole world simulation. It's not just running around with a gun; it's interacting with stuff, flying ships, and interactive with people cooperatively. If someone is sitting next to you in the Constellation, you need to see what he's doing with the controls.

We don't separate between first and third person. It's all unified. The third-person animations drive the first-person; when you're looking around in first-person, you're looking through the eyes. […] It makes things harder because you can't cheat in a lot of ways."

In regards to the timeline, Roberts also stated that back at PAX East the development team told fans the FPS module would arrive in April, but he also included the phrase, "Don't hold me to that." Roberts didn't want to announce a release date because they didn't want to be pressured by time constraints. He concluded with statement:

"In reality, we're probably weeks off. We're shooting to have FPS on the PTU round-about Gamescom or slightly after Gamescom. We're really talking about people getting to play FPS in a matter of 3, 4, maybe 5 weeks."

Finally and understandably so, Roberts wanted to emphasize that the team doesn't want to release a broken module. Currently Star Citizen holds the record for the largest amount of crowdfunding, standing at 85 million. If you'd like to read the entire interview at Gamers Nexus, you can do so right here.
