So remember when earlier last week I reported that Star Citizen was adding some pretty cool technology that would allow you to control your avatar’s face and voice using your webcam and computer microphone? Yeah, it was pretty swell, and I guess I would call it ‘revolutionary’ in some respects, but it didn’t’, like, blow my mind. Which is apparently more than I can say for many of Star Citizens fans, as soon after the launch of Alpha 3.3, the game – which I already remind you is the most successful gaming Kickstarter of all time – raised another $1 million from fan donations alone. In four days.
One million dollars. In four days.
Geezus, where is all this money coming from?
To be fair, it wasn’t just the voice and face thing that got fans excited: there was also the trailer for the singleplayer mode, Squadron 42, which had a lot of Hollywood faces in the mix. Plus, a number of new spaceships were announced, including the Anvil Valkyrie dropship, which costs $330 if you want to add it to your hanger. $700 if you want the premium version.
And people thought, “Yeah, this is a game that desperately needs more money.”
At this point, Cloud Imperium Games, the developer, has raised about $195 million on Star Citizen alone, which means the $200 breaking point could happen well before 2019, which will be eight years after the game started development. At this point, though, I’m sort of left to scratch my head and wonder what exactly is going to happen with this game. Clearly, people are still passionate about it, and it’s certainly proven to be more reliable than other kickstarted games in the past… but it wears its greed on its sleeve (that $700 dollar price tag is sure to make some publishers salivate) and I’m getting some serious No Man’s Sky vibes…
Well. Here’s hoping it all works out…
