If youre any type of person with an eye for PC gamingand Im going to assume you are, since youre on this websiteyouve probably heard of Star Citizen.  And statistically, if youve heard of Star Citizen, theres a better-than-not chance youve actually given money to the project at some point in its development.  Its well-known in the gaming sphere for being the most crowd funded video game ever, but recently, its lost that prestigious title.

...and picked up a new one.  As the game has now officially raised over $55 million in donations, Robert Space Industries and Genesis Book of World Records is happy to announce that the game is officially the most crowdfunded thing ever, unless you count taxes as a form of nation-wide crowdfunding.  In a recent blog post, Chairman Chris Roberts

Two years ago, the idea that a group of people who love space sims, PC gaming and the promise of a huge new universe to adventure around in could unite to raise $55 million to fund a game was unthinkable. Every one of you, from single Aurora pilots to those building their own fleets, has been part of something unprecedented.

He continued, musing as to why his game has been so wildly successful even before completion.

I sometimes get asked why continue to raise money the answer is that Star Citizen isnt a normal game. Its not being developed like a normal game and its not being funded like a normal game. Ive had to toss aside a lot of my knowledge from the old way of developing and embrace a completely new world... Star Citizen is not the type of game that will be played for a few weeks, then put on a shelf to gather dust. Instead of building a game in secrecy we can be fully open with you as a community who have made this game possible.

Its exciting for sure, but itll be even more exciting when we get to see the game for ourselves.  Apparently, its already in alpha, and while testers are enjoying the Dogfights, we wont be able to see the FPS portion of the game until this Novembers PAX Australia.  Its enough to make a guy wonder why were not seeing more developers jump onto the space-sim bandwagon afraid of the competition, perhaps?
