If you haven't been living underneath a rock for the past twenty-six and a half years, chances are you've heard of the critically acclaimed Final Fantasy series. Spanning from the first game that released on the NES back in 1987, through to their most recent games, Final Fantasy has kept to consoles and handheld devices. However, according to series producer Yoshinori Kitase, this may change. During a recent interview with Eurogamer, Kitase even reveals that early in the production of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, it was initially planned to be developed on PC and ported to consoles! However, Kitase also explains that the idea was eventually scrapped for reasons including security and the market situation. But, with recent success with ports of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII, Square Enix still has interest in the PC market, as even stated by Kitase.

"It's an early stage for us. We haven't got an awful lot of experience in this field. So when we have more know-how and experience in this market, we would be very interested"

But what does this mean for Square Enix as of right now? They're still riding the waves created by the grand conclusion to their most recent mini-trilogy, Final Fantasy XIII, their originally PC-first game. While this seems to provide evidence that it may perhaps become another favorite to be eventually ported to Steam (which would probably be alongside Final Fantasy X, in addition to the already-present VII and VIII by that point), there's not even rumors of such things happening yet. But, what about future games? Long awaited prisoner of Development Hell and recurring joke on the internet Final Fantasy Versus XIII, now rebranded as Final Fantasy XV, is currently being developed for the Xbox One and Playstation 4. But, what about PC? Wouldn't the power of a big gaming rig help drive home the gorgeous visuals the game is already promising us? While yes, it would definitely help, Square Enix is reportedly undecided on the matter.

Below is a trailer for Final Fantasy XV, which may be the first game in the series to be on PC at launch!
