I'm always happy to see a company try out a new IP, I'm even happier when that IP turns out to be incredibly original and interesting. Popular online shooters like Battlefield or Call of Duty aren't exactly an appropriate place for young gamers to be (even though you'll constantly hear them shouting obscenities in their little squeaky voices)... and until the recent Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare (and maybe Battalion Wars on Wii), there was never really an appropriate game for this demographic.
Splatoon is a very creative way around this solution, letting you fight it out as a bunch of humanoid squid people shooting ink guns. You not only take out the other side, you also use your ink to paint territory and control the map by restricting enemy movement. This seems like an idea you might see from an indie game on steam... in fact the painting mechanic has been done in a few indie FPS games... but something about Splatoon has that classic Nintendo fun feel to it. Plus it will be great to have a fun family game that you can pull out around the holidays when you have young ones around, and still enjoy a game with some deep gameplay mechanics.
