Implying that the default mode will be something less.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales continues to be the leading example of what the PlayStation 5 will be capable of. According to a recent statement by developer Insomniac Games, the game will support 4K resolution and 60 frames per second with a Performance Mode option.

Details beyond this have yet to be revealed. Calling it an optional mode implies that this will not be the default performance specs. This seems understandable, given the difficulty of running 4k games at 60 fps. Whether the default mode will be 1080p resolution or 30 fps (or both?) is not clear, though.

Its also not clear what sacrifices will be made to achieve these higher performance rates. Our current speculation is that various graphical aspects, such as render distance, lighting quality, or ray tracing, would be disabled in this mode.

The original Spider-Man game, which was released in 2018 for the PS4 and PS4 Pro, ran at a stable 30 frames per second. Based on the hardware improvements between the 4 and 5, its possible that Performance Mode would look similar to the original game, as a frame of reference.

This isnt the first time that Spider-Man was used as an example of performance. Before the PS5s official reveal, Sony held a tech demo to showcase what the upcoming console would be capable of. The game they chose as an example was 2018s Spider-Man. The primary example shown was the load times. The PS5 uses a specially designed solid state drive, cutting load times to a fraction of what they were on the original PS4.
