We discussed the Elite Dangerous Kickerstarter about a month back and how well the Alpha seems to be going... David Braben, the co-writer of the game series recently had a few comments on the actual size and scope of the game and how it relates to the real world or in the games case, "our galaxy."
"Our night sky is based on real data it is not a hand-drawn backdrop as you might expect, but the Milky Way and many of the stars around it are simply too bright and too uniform when compared to the real observable night sky."
Braben knew some adjustments were in order after discovering the following;
"It appears as though our planet actually sits within that dust cloud, which is why the Milky Way appears so faint,"
So now we learned something according to Cambridge Institute of Astronomy's Dr. Floor van Leeuwen;
"Astronomy is a field where you find a continuous exchange between new observations and modeling. The conflicts that show up are generally due to simplifications made in the models, for which new observations can provide improved guidelines. There's a continuously evolving and developing understanding of space, in which both models and observations play important roles."
That's right... Elite Dangerous will follow in its predeccesors footsteps in creating a VAST universe for us to play in...
I for one will surely be checking this game out since I have been a fan of space sims. One wonders how it might stack up against the upcoming Star Citizen, STO and the almighty EVE. For now, unless you have a load of money to throw down ($300) then I suggest you check out the E3 2014 Trailer and Developer Demo below;
