After ages of taunting, Bandai Namco has officially announced the next iteration of one of the most famous weapon-based fighting games, Soulcalibur VI.

The new game will be coming to PC and consoles in 2018, coincidentally the same year as the series' 20th anniversary. Soulcalibur came to life in arcades back in 1998, though it was preceded by Soul Edge in 1995.

Soulcaliber V, the most recent entry in the series, released nearly six years ago. It focused on the future of the timeline, letting the player control the children of many of the veteran fighters. Since then, there have been remastering and ports of older Soulcalibur games, but this is the bonafide true new game.

The end few seconds of the trailer tease a new fighter. All we see it a bladed weapon with another blade at the end of the handle. Imagine Darth Maul's lightsaber but with metal. A new combatant will no doubt mix things up. Based on the nature of the weapon, it can be assumed the character will be a flowy character focusing on multiple hits, no doubt with some range. However, this is all speculation.

Much like the hand-to-hand fighting game of the same publisher, Tekken 7, Soulcalibur VI will run on the Unreal Engine 4. Personally, I think that the more fantasy-centric style of the game will be a better fit for the engine, allowing it to look its absolute best. Motohiro Okubo will serve as a producer on the game.
