The partnership between Sony and Square was forged in a console war many generations ago. Square had made games (some downright incredible games) exclusively on Nintendo systems for two generations-- and had even done a Final Fantasy tech demo for the Nintendo 64 to indicate where they were going next. They shocked the gaming industry by ditching Nintendo and bringing Final Fantasy VII exclusively to the brand new Sony Playstation. Since there was no internet to complain on at the time, most of us just wept into our issue of EGM.
That's why today is a somewhat poignant (and somber) occasion that Sony is selling off all their stock in Square Enix. The Final Fantasy series is no longer the system seller it once was, and their recent successful games like Bravely Default were on Nintendo 3DS. Square Enix also bought Eidos a while back and while the recent Tomb Raider reboot was a success... Hitman: Absolution wasn't much so.
While Sony hasn't acknowledged the reason behind the sale, it does seem like they're in the middle of restructuring and cleaning house. This news follows other big moves like shutting down their entire Sony VAIO PC line, and selling off their old HQ in Tokyo. Sony is making $150 million in the sale, which was a 8.25% stake in the company. So I guess Sony and Squeenix will no longer be wearing matching BFF bracelets, but I expect them to keep their business relationship professional.
