Sony Offers PS5 Pre-Orders, But Won't Reveal Release Date or Price

We know that Microsoft has plans to release the Xbox Series X fairly soon — by November, assuming nothing changes — and Sony has been insistent that the PS5 will be released sometime this year as well. But even though we’re dangerously close to the year being over (oh god) we still don’t have a date or even a price for the damn thing, which is somewhere between incredibly suspicious and unnecessarily confusing.

Well, prepare to be even more suspicious and confused, because Sony is now allowing certain people to pre-order a PS5.

Here’s how it works: you go to this site, you log in with your PSN account (apparently only “previous customers” are eligible to pre-order a PS5 at this point) and you enter your payment method. It’s a first-come-first-serve situation, so while we know there’s a limited amount of PS5’s available to be pre-ordered, we don’t yet know if we’ve reached the limit yet.

In any case, these pre-orders do not come with a price tag or a release date, so you’re functionally writing Sony a blank check to send you a PS5 whenever they feel like it. That… is more than a little suspicious, if you ask me.

In any case, there are limits to what you can actually order — at most, you can pre-order
  • 1 PS5 Console or 1 PS5 Digital Edition
  • 2 DualSense wireless controllers
  • 2 DualSense charging stations
  • 2 Pulse 3D wireless headsets
  • 2 Media remotes
  • 2 HD Cameras
Which is actually a good way to at least slow down people hoarding and re-selling the new console. But that doesn’t make it any less weird that you’re paying an unknown amount of money for something without a release date yet.

Still, I’d bet these are selling out quickly, so if you need to be one of the first to get a PS5, you should stop reading now and hop to it.
