The past-gen king of gaming is starting to take a rest. Sony Interactive Entertainment has started to discontinue certain PS4 consoles in Japan.

Reported by GameWatch (via VGC), the PlayStation maker will only sell the 500GB PS4 Slim in Japan, discontinuing the other variations, including the PS4 Pro and original PS4. Once the remaining stock is sold, they will no longer be available.

For a while, there was a concern that the same course of action would be taken in Western countries like the United States. This is largely due to the PlayStations online store showing a notification over the holidays saying that they will no longer sell the PS4 Pro after stock is gone. That message was quickly deleted, however. Since then, SIE has yet to make any confirmation on this plan for the States.

Such courses of action are inevitable, really. The PlayStation 5 has launched and Sony will be firmly dedicating much of their focus on ensuring that it both launches and sustains itself successfully.

They werent even the first one to make that commitment. Microsoft discontinued production of the Xbox One X and Xbox One S Digital Edition several months before the launch of the Xbox Series consoles.

One important note is that this will not be the end of the PS4. PlayStation head Jim Ryan previously expressed a commitment to the PS4 community. He wants to keep them engaged and happy for a long while. But if you already have a PS4, you likely aren't concerned about buying another.
