It was about October of last year that we last heard about Sega’s ambitious and slightly poorly conceived foray into the world of cinema with the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Supposedly a mix of live-action and CGI, it would put Sonic and pals in a world full of human beings (which wouldn’t be a first for the Blue Blur) and most likely pit them against their old nemesis, Dr. Eggman… although obviously we can’t know that for sure, as most details surrounding the production are being kept tightly under wraps.
The only thing we know for “sure” is that relative newcomer Jeff Fowler is at the helm to direct, and Deadpool director Tim Miller has agreed to act as the executive producer, which isn’t as important as you might hope or think.
Well, according to the Hollywood Reporter, we’ve just uncovered a new bit of information regarding this movie: a release date. Specifically, it’s looking as if Paramount and Sega are aiming to release this bad boy on November 15th, 2019, meaning we’re close to two years away from seeing the finished product.
That said, anything could happen to push that date back, or in theory, push it forward. Everything we’ve heard about it so far has come from reports; almost nothing has been said by Sega or Paramount itself, meaning fans are sort of piecing this together one small nugget at a time. It’s not unusual for a project like this to be kept under tight wraps, but it still would be nice if we knew something – anything – more substantive.
Especially since so many of these types of movies (looking at you, Bioshock movie) tend to die in these planning phases. I’m not sure fans of Sonic would be heartbroken if he didn’t make a movie premier, but I, for one, never tire of a good train wreck.
