Sonic Team Reveals Team Sonic Racing

A confusing name, an intriguing premise.

Speaking of Sonic news, we’ve got more than new movie details to satisfy fans of Sega’s #1 mascot. A recently-leaked game listing (again, by Walmart) was recently confirmed by Sega itself, so now the world is aware that the next Sonic the Hedgehog game will be, in fact, another entry in the long-running Sega Racing series, called Team Sonic Racing.

You might think with a confusing title like that, the game is a racing game with all of Sonic Team’s characters, but that’s actually not true. While it’s very functionally similar to the old Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed games (and is being made by the same developer, Sumo Studio), this game only has Sonic characters, 15 in total, split up between “Power”, “Speed”, and “Technique” classes. You can race in the Grand Prix, test your mettle in Time Trails, or explore a new mode called “Team Adventure”.

“Teamwork” seems to be the main selling point of this particular game, as a heavy emphasis appears to be on cooperating with the other racers on your team to secure a victory. Together, you can eliminate opponents, use “team movies”, and utilize “team ultimates”, which will probably give you some tremendous advantage or shape the track to your wishes in some form or another. We’re not sure if this team-racing thing is exclusive to the “Team Adventure” mode or if it’s prevalent through the entire experience, but we’re probably going to learn more about the game at this year’s E3, so more details are just around the corner.

Speaking for myself, I was a huge fan of the Sega All-Star Racing games, and I’ve been waiting for more games like it for a while. And the new team-based racing sounds like it could be really unique, and help actually distinguish the game from the series that it’s often accused of aping, Mario Kart.

It's supposed to come out sometime this Winter for PC, Xbox One, PS4, and the Switch.
