Let's see, there's Castlevania, Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil, Dragon's Dogma, Tomb Raider, and I'm sure a few others I've forgotten... Netflix seems pretty interested in making as many cartoons based off video games as it possibly can. Of the 5 shows listed, only 2 are actually out yet -- Castlevania, which is charming and engaging when it's not pointlessly grim and illogical, and Dragon's Dogma, which was just plain old terrible. But even with a spotty success rate, it seems they're content to keep at it, because they just announced yet another animated adaption of a famous video game character. This one, however, is a bit more... conventional.
Called "Sonic Prime", this 24-episode long series will, as you might expect, star Sonic the Hedgehog himself as he tries to save the universe and go on a journey of self-discovery at the same time. It sounds pretty conventional, and judging by the fact it's targeting kids age 7 to 11, we can expect it to hit a lot of familiar beats.
That said, age ratings aren't actually a very good metric of quality: a lot of Netflix's best shows, from She-Ra to Voltron, are aimed at kids, and yet they still manage to hit some pretty resonant emotional beats. What's probably more important is the creative force behind it, one WildBrain, which has worked on Snoopy in Space, Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, Carmen Sandiego and Mega Man: Fully Charged, which... actually doesn't tell us a whole lot, I haven't heard of most of those. Apparently, Mega Man: Fully Charged is pretty bad, but Carmen Sandiego is pretty good? A mixed bag. So I guess it'll be a coin toss on how this turns out.
There's not actually a whole lot more to add, we've got nothing else to go on, just that it's supposed to come out next year. So keep an eye peeled, I guess.
