As ya’ll might be aware, a new Sonic game is coming out, called Sonic Forces. It looks to be another Sonic Generations-style game where you can switch between Modern and Classic Sonic, but then why isn’t it just called Sonic Generation 2? What about this game makes it Sonic “Forces”, exactly?

Interesting question. Let’s answer it with a trailer, shall we?

In a world where Eggman has taken over, even two Sonics will need some help. For the first time in the series' history, create and play as your own custom character in the war to take back the planet.

The trailer itself doesn’t reveal as much as we’d probably like about the actual game itself, but it does highlight a feature that’s, honestly, a long time coming: Customizable characters. You can create your own anthropomorphized animal avatar (anything from a cat to a bird to a bear) with custom items and abilities. Normally, that would seem to be a strange fit for a platformer, but fans have been making their own Sonic avatars on places like Deviantart for so long, it seems like a natural fit for the series to finally make it canonical.

Color me excited. This might actually be the first Sonic game I’ve bought since Sonic Unleashed.

It launches for PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch this holiday season.
