SMITE (which I hate), has been one of the very rare “middle ground” MOBAs, perhaps the only one of its kind. It’s far from the wild popularity enjoyed by League of Legends, DOTA 2, and Heroes of the Storm, yet its far-and-removed better known and well-liked than the Dead Island MOBA, theMagicka MOBA, the Lord of the Rings MOBA (that was a thing, remember?)… even Heroes of Newerth has fallen behind it. It’s successful, but not a breakout hit, profitable, but not enough to really excuse Hi-Rez studio from innovating.
And boy, have they.
Earlier last year, they showed us SMITE: Tactics, a CGI-Tower Defense mix that looked rather neat, and now, they’ve just released a new spin-off for their iconic god-combat game, called “The Trials of King Hercules”, the first of many co-operative dungeons that are apparently coming to the game.
In this new mode, you and two friends go through a PvE dungeon using any one of the game’s characters, leveling up and earning items that can be used by any god you want, not just the one you ran through the dungeon with. There’s even a town hub where you can get quests, rewards, and purchase buffs and equipment to make each run more profitable than the last. There’s even a hard mode that will unlock if you do well enough, which pits you against a leviathan.
So yeah, it looks like a MMO got mixed in with a MOBA. I wonder if that’s a winning combination or the worst of both worlds.
There’s also a new Adventure Pack, which you can buy for a whole bunch of exclusive loot, which is apparently going to be a limited time deal, so, might want to hop on that.
Otherwise… yeah, looks pretty neat, I guess. Not enough to make me stop hating Smite (which I do), but I’m sure the fans will appreciate it.
