Skyrim Together Modders are Getting Death Threats From "Fans" Now

Looks like some things never change.

I don’t think it’s controversial to point out that sometimes gamers can be real jerks. We can do great things sometimes, sure, one look at a Games Done Quick will prove that, but we’re also capable of doing some real… jerk things. And it’s not hard to find: in fact, for one depressing example, all you have to look at the May report for the fan-made mod “Skyrim Together”, which is an ambitious project that looks to make the single-player epic Skyrim into a delightful co-op experience.

As in this May report, the team has announced that one of their Modders, Yamashi, have been receiving death threats.

"Since March a part of the community has been harassing Yamashi, even going so far as to send multiple direct death threats (all of which have been properly reported to the appropriate authorities)," they said. "At the same time many are not asking—but demanding—that we do certain things such as weekly updates, that we open source the mod, etc.

We know that you are most likely trying to help, but this isn’t helping...our work on this is very irregular, with people maybe not being able to work on the mod for weeks, and then suddenly having full weeks to dedicate to the project.”

Now, to be… “fair”, I guess, this wasn’t entirely unprovoked. Yamashi was receiving threats specifically because he told fans that the Skyrim Together team “doesn’t owe the community anything”, which might normally be true if they weren’t caught stealing code from another mod without crediting it. So that’s a little bit awkward. They also announced that they’ll be releasing a new build of the mod now, perhaps out of spite, because these builds would no doubt be buggy as heck and extremely frustrating to play.

But hey, whatever makes the fans happy, right?
