There are a lot of wholesome content creators on the net, and one of the most famous might be the “Skyrim Grandma” -- Shirley Curry, an older woman, who rose to internet fame for routinely posting YouTube videos of her playing Skyrim and generally being a very sweet pea. The internet flocked her with praise and love, and she’s even got an enormous number of subscribers, sitting at 829,000. However, despite all her success, in her most recent video she announced she’s taking a break from posting videos online, because as it turns out, we don’t deserve her.
Here’s the video:
The first reason she listed for deciding to take a break is that while she doesn’t receive the usual brand of internet abuse (or at least, doesn’t receive it at the levels that other creators get), she gets a lot of backseat gamers who are trying to tell her how to play, or what games to play. While perhaps well-meaning, she says they detract from her experience because she’s just trying to go at her own speed, roleplaying and having a chill time, and that she knows that other games exist but she just wants to play this one.
The second reason is that despite her enormous number of subscribers, very few people actually watch her videos. On average, her videos get about 5-8k views, and those viewers only stick around for a couple minutes. So that means most of her 30-50 minute clips go completely unwatched, and she’s finding that frustrating, to say the least.
In fact, this problem is so pervasive that we’re only reporting on this now in spite of the fact the video is about a month old now.
In any case, after taking a break, she’ll be posting videos a lot less often now.
I, of course, can’t judge anyone for this, since I’m not a subscriber or a watcher of her videos, but I still find it upsetting that something so wholesome and pure is seen as little more than an internet sideshow while all the real success comes to people who make a habit of being dicks online – looking at you, Dr. Disrespect.
But whatever. Give the people want they want, I guess.
