Skullgirls, the cult fighting game from way back in 2012, pretty much stopped being a 'thing' after the release of Second Encore for the PS4. Now that Lab Zero has moved on to Indivisible, and the crowd-raised cash from their Indiegogo campaign has run dry, it seems as if this is the last we'll see of Skullgirls until Lab Zero decides--if they decide, in any case--to make an Annie of the Stars crossover, because apparently she's their favorite thing to come out of that entire universe.

But, in a surprise announcement over the weekend, we saw that while Lab Zero might be done with Skullgirls, that doesn't mean the world at large has to call it quit with their favorite disturbed young woman fighting simulator. Called Skullgirls, this game promises to offer a more strategic solution to your standard phone-based mobile fighters:

The mobile Skullgirls release distills the essence of a complex fighting game into a more casual, accessible mobile experience with RPG elements.

The mobile version of Skullgirls is designed to tell complimentary stories to the console game in “Seasons,” with the game’s first season acting as a prequel to the Console game. The mobile game includes a deep character collection featuring dozens of characters and special moves to collect and upgrade - from Parasite Weave Filia to Epic Sax Big Band.

Of course, when they say "Dozens of characters", they mean that in a very Five Nights at Freddy's World kind of way, where you have a small handful of characters and about a million different pallet swaps. Which isn't fun. But hey, it looks like an interesting game, even if we don't know much about it at this point.

Anyway. It's a product of Hidden Variable Studios, the folks behind games like Bag It!, Up & Up, and Tic Tactics, so... this is clearly going to be their most high-profile work yet. Fingers crossed...
