Shovel Knight was first released by Yacht Club Games on June 26th, 2014. And in the over four years since, it’s been expanded, improved, and upgraded with a series of paid and free DLC that have added new characters, new stories, new modes, new enemies, new everything. And since then, Shovel Knight has become one of the most iconic characters in gaming, showing up in crossovers and referenced in other games, and having his game ported to more devices and consoles than even Skyrim has managed. People love Shovel Knight, but alas, all good things must come to an end, and the final bit of DLC the game will receive has just been announced.
Again.
Okay, so, technically, the last time we heard the final DLC for Shovel Knight was coming, it was earlier this year when King of Cards was announced. But now there’s a brand-new final DLC, which will take Shovel Knight in a very different direction, called Showdown.
Unlike the other expansions, which added new campaigns, this expansion adds a brand-new 2D fighting mode, where sixteen characters from the Shovel Knight universe can battle in a sort of Super Smash/Shovel Knight fusion. And while you can play this mode with friends (only locally, unfortunately), each character will also have their own story mode with dialogue and rivalries, like a real fighting game.
It’ll be coming free to everyone who owns the Treasure Trove edition of the game, while everyone else will have to pay up for the feature. It’s also worth noting it will be released for every version of the game except the Vita or 3DS, so if that’s the version of Shovel Knight you own… sucks for you, I guess.
We don’t know if this will launch before or after King of Cards, which is supposed to come out later this year. We’ll see.
