Shigeru Miyamoto Feels Nintendo Should Have Made Minecraft

Which is quite a regret.

The team over at Glixel had the opportunity to interview Shigeru Miyamoto. They talked about Mario, Nintendo's current ventures, and Minecraft. That last point is a bit of an outlier. Nintendo didn't make Minecraft. They weren't related to the Mojang-turned-Microsoft product at all. But, Miyamoto wishes they were. In that interview, when asked about his favorite games, Minecraft came up, but in a melancholy way.

I do like Minecraft, but really more from the perspective of the fact that I really feel like that's something we should have made. We had actually done a lot of experiments that were similar to that back in the N64 days and we had some designs that were very similar. It's really impressive to me to see how they've been able to take that idea and turn it into a product.

That's would be an interesting reality to see. If Nintendo had been the one to create a Minecraft-style game first, that would have changed everything. Nintendo could have stayed on top far after the Wii's gimmick faded away. Also, there's absolutely no way "Ninten-Craft" wouldn't have had Mario in it.

So next time you get down about the current release schedule, keep in mind there's an alternate universe out there where Nintendo made Minecraft.
