A new trailer for Shenmue 3 was revealed on Monday as part of the PC Gaming Show. While it looked nice, the end card listed PS4 and the Epic Games Store as the only available platforms for the game. This was then confirmed in an update to the game's Kickstarter page.
"We are happy to announce that Shenmue III for PC will be an Epic Games Store exclusive. Development for Shenmue III has been moving forward using Unreal Engine and the support we have received from Epic has been excellent. But most importantly, in looking for the most enjoyable experience on PC, it was decided together with Deep Silver after much discussion that the Epic Games Store would be the best distribution platform option."
We can understand why the Epic Game Store would be appealing since it would yield significantly less publisher fees for an Unreal Engine game. But the fact that it's an exclusive instead of being available on both EGS and Steam tells us that Epic themselves paid Ys Net a visit, holding a very very large bag of cash.
As you might expect, people are not happy about this. Many Kickstarter backers are actually wanting a refund. Unfortunately, no refunds are being offered at this time.
Shenmue 3 releases on PS4 and PC (Epic Games Store) on November 19, 2019.
