I haven't been reporting on it (because I have better things to do, like stare directly at the sun) but the Playstation Network Shop has apparently gone through some troubling changes in the past few months, namely, it's started advertising and selling games that would have had a hard time surviving on Steam Greenlight. Starting with "Life of Black Tiger" a bad mobile game and an even worse ported PS4 game (that costs far more), it seems the PS4 has been receiving a steady drip-feed of terrible content that you won't find on the front page, but still has no place on a highly curtailed storefront like the PSN.
You never would have guessed that Shenmue 3 might find itself in a similar situation, but looking at the newly-released trailer, it'd be hard to call the game anything but Greenlight shovelware. I'll let you see what I mean.
It looks good. For about 8 seconds. But then you start to zoom in on faces and look at animation and you realize that there's a reason most companies don't do triple-A games on budgets of about two million dollars raised on kickstarter.
The music and environments look good, though.
Shenmue 3 is scheduled to release late next year, but if we're lucky it'll get another delay so it won't go all Mass Effect Andromeda on us. Better to release a good game late than a bad game on time...
