You know, I’ve always been amazed at how generous gamers can actually be.
For as mired as our culture is in controversies, and for all the horrible and toxic people that have become so prevalent in our online gaming (and YouTubers), at the end of the day when it’s time to pitch in and try to help our community, gamers get the job done. I’m talking about the record-breaking numbers raised by charities during the Games Done Quick marathons, the consistent success of Humble Bundles, fundraising efforts by developers and publishers…
And now we’re at it again, and this time, we’re playin’ for keeps. This weekend, a new charitable organization called the One Gamer Fund will host a super-weekend of charity fundraising, combining seven different gaming charities together to hopefully raise money and awareness in the wake of some very recent disasters.
The Charities in question - AbleGamers, Child's Play, Games for Change, Global Game Jam, IGDA Foundation, Stack-Up and Take This - will be splitting all funds raised during this weekend-long event amongst themselves. So if you’ve ever been indecisive about who to support, this is a great time to do it.
How can you chip in? Easy. First of all, between now and September 25th, Good Shepard Entertainment has a huge bundle of their games on sale over Steam for around 60 bucks and half of all proceeds earned by this bundle go to charity. Not good enough? Fair! Acclaimed charitable juggernaut Yetee (well known for their part in the Games Done Quick series) have special 12 dollar shirts you can buy for the weekend, which will go to the charities. Twitch, meanwhile, will highlight charity streams on their front page, so you can either go watch and donate over there, or host your own charity stream. Otherwise, you can just donate directly to the One Gamer Fund on their website.
It looks to be a very good weekend to balance out your karma. Go ahead and give the page a visit, and I hope you donate!
