Here’s what Vice President of Product Management and Marketing at Activision, Michelle Fonseca, has to say about this accomplishment:
“Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has brought something very special and unique to Activision’s portfolio of games. It’s been an honor to work with FromSoftware to help introduce a brand-new franchise to gamers around the world. The fans have made Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice one of the most incredible game launches of 2019 thus far. The game has performed well on all platforms including PC and we’re excited by the continued support from gamers and critics alike. It has been gratifying to see the enjoyment from fans when they overcome each challenge.”
They also included another interesting statistic that you don’t typically see in these kinds of press releases: Twitch views. Apparently, on launch day, the game was the #1 viewed game on Twitch, with 631 million minutes watched over the weekend. By the end of the week, that number had skyrocketed to 1.1 billion watched minutes.
That’s an interesting – but not unearned – flex. Activision is probably hoping that views will translate to purchases later down the road, a reasonable expectation, at least if I were to speak from experience. I myself, unfortunately, don’t really have the system to play Shadows Die Twice right now, but I’m saving my pennies and dimes to make it happen.
Anyway. Congrats to From Software. You did it again.
