Despite all it's been through, No Man's Sky is still actively in development. Nearly a year after its release it would see a major update that added new worlds, new stories, base building, and more. Now we get a good look at their next major update: Next.

Next plans to add a number of long desired features to Hello Games' procedurally generated sandbox game. This includes third-person perspective, visual overhauls, commanding fleets, and even true multiplayer at last.

All of these features are shown off in the update's announcement trailer. While it's hard to trust trailers, the visuals certainly look overhauled.

Sean Murray revealed some details about these features in an email to Polygon.

Multiplayer will allow you to team up with a small group of friends and explore the universe together. You can also come across strangers in the open worlds. This introduces a new degree of space piracy and danger both on the ground and in open space. You can now customize your appearance, as well. How else will you stand out?

There are new planetary rings and space visuals to further reinforce the beauty of the universe. world terrain generation has been "dramatically improved," which includes better ground textures, water, and clouds. NPCs, buildings, and ships have also been given greater detail. You can now view the world, on foot or in your ship, in the third person.

Bases are no longer limited to the designated building areas. You can now build bases anywhere you'd like. The complexity and size limits have reportedly been expanded. You can also build multiple bases now.

While the last update added a freighter, it was limited to only one. You will now be able to command a fleet of frigates and frieghters. They can be sent out into other galaxies, or summoned to your current position for aid.

Their Atlas Update made a tremendous difference to the game's enjoyment, and this may be a larger update than that. No Man's Sky originally launched in 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The Next update will release on July 24 for all systems as a free update.
