Visual novels encompass all sorts of genres, but only some are based off of real experiences. Take the underdog story based on the competitive world of StarCraft 2. A free visual novel is out titled SC2VN, which revolves around a Western gamer trying to become a pro-StarCraft 2 player. You can choose between male or female, but the default name will be Mach. This character will begin with the Wings of Liberty, trying to earn some well-deserved recognition, but fails to qualify for VSL, which is basically the equivalent to the Korean StarCraft 2 league.
However, before Mach is sent home for good, he/she is noticed by a Korean Terran player named Accel. He acts as Mach's guide, leading the player into the super big leagues. It's a typical underdog story that also delves into the struggles with the idea of failure and what it means to be a pro-gamer, dealing with rival teams and fearing alienation of close friends and family.
Tip: Pro-gaming isn't exactly always fun. In fact, a lot of the time, it isn't.
You can check out the in-depth review from PC Gamer here, which does contain some spoilers. It's just pretty cool that there's actually a visual novel out there that is about the eSports world--specifically StarCraft 2.
