It appears as though the sale projections for the PSVR have fallen quite significantly, despite price drops in the UK. It was projected at around 2.6 million, which was incredibly high. After looking over some of the data, researchers have changed there prediction to be around 750,000 units. That's quite a decent margin to be off by. I would understand if maybe you were a few hundred thousand off, but the sales were estimated to be almost 2 million higher than it is right now.
The main cause for this fall is mostly due to the game lineup and lack of marketing. The overall lack of quality games for VR has been talked about quite a bit in the past few months, and without some strong titles there's no reason for people to shell out the hundreds of dollars for a headset. From a marketing standpoint, I think the headset has been promoted well, but there isn't really a reason to go buy it. A lot of people have heard about the VR headset, but why should I go out and buy it right now? Sony hasn't been coming up with very many reasons.
While the 750k projection is far lower than the 2.6 million, the Playstation VR headset is still projected to sell more than other virtual reality gear. The Oculus is going to be selling around 355k units this year, and the HTC Vive is looking like it will land around the 420k range. Keep in mind, the Playstation VR has been on the market for much less time than the other two headsets, so I definitely wouldn't call this a failure for Sony.
I expect the VR sales to really start peaking once the games get a bit better. Right now, from my personal experiences, a lot of these games feel like demos. The full potential of the VR headset hasn't been achieved in any title that's been released and hopefully game developers start to really push the limits here and make VR gaming something that stands out.
