RuneScape turned 20 years old yesterday, an anniversary that either makes you feel incredibly old, or makes the internet seem incredibly old. In either case, it's a pretty big milestone for one of the most iconic MMORPG's on the planet, so it's only natural that the developers, Jagex, would want to celebrate in style. And the plan, it seems, is to turn the whole year into one big party with prizes, events, and all sorts of cool crap for players new and old.
For example, right now, people can go to the aptly named "Lumbridge Crater" to talk to an old man and get a free 20th anniversary cape and outfit. You can also get various other goodies, like EXP boosts, at the crater, so if you've ever wanted to check out a hole behind a castle, now's probably a good time.
But there's more substantial stuff happening: for example, all through the month of January they're going to have week-long events that will give players more opportunities to get cool stuff and engage with the game in unique new ways. For example, right now they're hosting the "celebration of quests" event, where players can partake three mini-quests with the help of some iconic characters from RuneScape's two-decade history. There will also be a four-part quest called "Once Upon a Time" that will, reportedly, include hints at what waits in RuneScape's future.
Oh, and Old School RuneScape is also getting in on the action, with a special event that allows players to battle Dragons and Demons with the "Green Gnome Child", whatever that is. Plus, apparently Old School RuneScape will also be going on Steam later this year, so... that's cool, I suppose.
It's a rare treat when a game manages to survive this long, so if you happen to be an old fan -- or a new player -- this should prove to be a very exciting time indeed.
