But to be fair, I was lied to first. See, earlier, you may have heard a report from Sony’s SVP Masayasu Ito that the company had effectively halted all first-party development for the PS Vita so they could better focus their efforts on the PS4. Well, as it turns out, that’s not exactly true--it’s not 100% false, but there’s some fine print on that comment that Sony Europe Boss Jim Ryan went to VG24/7 to clarify, saying in an interview:
“To clarify what was said about Vita, which was either misinterpreted or misreported: I think what was said was that we're no longer in the business of triple-A development of games for Vita. But there is still first-party Vita content being worked upon. We do view [the Vita] as something that will be of considerable long-term importance. I'm aware that might come across as a bit mealy-mouthed, but I think that's probably about as much as I can say."
I’m not 100% sure if this is a genuine comment assuring us the PS Vita is still around, or an attempt to appease PS Vita fans preemptively before they rage over what could be called the truth. It wouldn’t be the first time a company backed off from a mistaken moment of truth, but, at the same time, this is far more believable than the idea of Sony dropping the PS Vita entirely.
Still, it’ll be hard to take his comment without any salt until we see some of these first-party projects.
