Deus Ex launched the second game in the series rebooted chronology, Mankind Divided, on August 23rd of last year. And reception of the sequel to the critically acclaimed Human Revolution was… mixed. It was all the cyberpunk sandbox fun you’d expect, sure, but it came packed with unnecessary DLC, an unwanted extra mode, and the small problem that asked a lot of questions, many of which went unanswered despite the game’s criminally short play-time.

It’s well known that the reason for the short length and lack of satisfying answers is because Square Enix decided that Eidos should scrap some of their planned game and save it for a third game in the series, but now, thanks to their new Marvel team-up and lackluster sales from Mankind Divided, a source within Square Enix reported to Eurogamer that Square Enix is putting the series on hiatus for “the foreseeable future."

Meaning all those juicy plot details we’re looking to solve? Probably not going to happen… but that’s not to say there’s no hope. When asked for comment, Square Enix replied with:

"While we are still working on expanding the Deus Ex Universe, along with creating new content and updates for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, we're also devoting our talents towards working with Crystal Dynamics and Marvel on The Avengers project."

So there’s a chance that future DLC for the game might help plug those plotholes, but still, judging on the DLC released so far, that’s not incredibly likely. Oh well.

You win some, you lose some, I suppose.
