Rumor: Nintendo to be Ceasing Wii U Production by the End of 2016 [UPDATE]

This is a sad day indeed for the Wii U. According to Japanese newspaper Nikkei (translation provided by Dr. Serkan Toto), Nintendo will be ceasing production of the Wii U by the end of this year. Despite being a great console with solid titles, it just hasn't been making a ton of money for Nintendo. Unfortunately, it has been one of the slowest-selling consoles for the company. More than likely this hints towards the unveiling of the Nintendo NX this year, followed by a release probably sometime at the end of the year.

Perhaps the Wii U will be cheap then in the near future so I can finally snag one... unless the ceasing of production actually means that the Wii U will be considered a collectible and thus rise in prices. Guess I will have to search for one when it comes clearance season for the console.

At least Nintendo has been generating a ton of downloads on its Miitomo app. Now that has been a major surprise. I mean, 1 million downloads in Japan after three days is pretty damn amazing.

Update: According to Kotaku, Nintendo is denying the report. A Nintendo spokesperson told Japanese site IT Media:
 

"This isn't an announcement from our company. From the next quarter and thereafter as well, production [of the Wii U] is scheduled to continue."
