It was just the other day that we heard the rumor that Activision is going to throw its hat into the Battle Royale ring by having Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 shed the traditional single-player campaign and replace it with a battle royale mode, which while unverified, makes way too much sense for me to take it as anything but hard fact. And like conjoined twins who refuse to do one thing without the other, DICE, the developer behind Metal of Honor, looks to follow suit with their own Battle Royale project, although the rumors surrounding this particular project is a bit more abstract than the more “grounded” rumors surrounding Black Ops 4.
Venturebeat was the one to break the news, citing "someone with knowledge of the studio who asked to remain anonymous.” This unknown studio source claims that the mode is still being tested internally and that it will likely be either a part of Battlefield 5, or it will ship separately as its own thing. This is assuming, of course, they go forward with it.
Battlefield 5, of course, is just around the corner, and while we haven’t heard much about it other than speculation that it would be set in WW2, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen confirmed that it was definitely coming out this year. Likely around Christmas, all things considered.
As for the Battle Royale mode? If EA had any sense – which, to their credit, they do not – they would see that the market was getting a bit too inflated with those and refocus their efforts on providing further unique multiplayer experiences rather than trying to strong-arm their way into that niche. Plus, maybe it’s just me, but the idea of putting a Battle Royale mode in a WW2 historic period is just… so depressing.
Tell you one thing: for it to be accurate, it’d have to take place on the eastern front.
