Not too long ago, we reported that more Resident Evil remakes were probably in the works at Capcom, considering a recent poll in Asia as well as the fact that the last two remakes have been, without hyperbole, some of the best games Capcom have managed to put out in years. But with Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 taken care of, the logical next game to remake would be Resident Evil 4. Well, according to a VGC rumor, that’s exactly the next game up for the remake process.
The rumor goes that the RE 4 remake will be produced by an external studio, M-Two, which was founded by former Platinum Games head Tatsuya Minami, and has apparently been in the works since 2018. This would make it quite similar to the other resident evil remakes, and like them, it’s likely that Capcom is loaning these external companies a lot of internal staff and development resources. It’s also understood that the game’s original director, Shinji Mikami, declined an offer to work on the remake, but did give it his blessing. He’s also, allegedly, providing informal guidance on the project.
However, while this remake certainly has a lot in common with the other two Capcom have put out recently, there’s one major difference: by all measures, Resident Evil 4 still holds up. It’s one of the best-selling games Capcom has ever made, and second only to the first Resident Evil game, it’s probably the game they’re re-released as-is the most. There’s nothing they really need to remaster about it, unless Capcom is hoping to strip away all the goofy, campy goodness that soaked it in the hopes of replacing it with something a bit more authentically scary.
If that’s a good idea or not has yet to be seen, or even if these rumors are true, but it’s very interesting and believable regardless.
