It began with a new, mysterious twitter account called @puposaru20th. It had posted an image and caption in Japanese. The image shows a lush forest landscape with an ape hiding behind a tree. The ape bears the familiar style of the Ape Escape games. The caption, when translated from Japanese, reads as follows
"Piposal (Twenty years from that. I've been running around for a long time, but I wonder if there are any guys out there to chase ...?)
#Sargetchu #Sargetchu 20th"
Obviously, this is implying a 20 year something relating to the first Ape Escape, possible a remaster or remake of the original game. But can it be trusted? Normally, a random twitter with a good looking concept image isn't enough to develop trust, but this account has something that fakers don't: The official Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan twitter account is following them.
The SIE Japan account only follows a very select bunch of twitter accounts, no more than 147 of them. They don't follow frivolously. This lends a new sense of legitimacy to the account and the teaser it's presenting.
There has been a growing trend of remaking classic era games, after all. Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom is getting a remake after all, and SIE is investing in a MediEvil remake as well.
If they want to hit the 20 year anniversary, they'd need to release whatever it is they have before the end of 2019. So if this is real, it's not far away.
