Rocksteady Studios, the peeps behind the three good Batman: Arkham games (Asylum, City, and Knight, in case you recently suffered a head injury) has been rather quiet since Arkham Knight came out. In 2016 they released a Batman: Arkham VR game, which… happened, to be sure, but since then we haven’t heard much.
It’s always been a safe assumption that they were working on something – after all, you don’t release a game series like Arkham and just drop off the face of the planet. But while we’re still not sure what that project might be, several new job posting on their website is giving us at least a small clue as to what might be coming. They’re looking for new artists, animators, coders, QA, scriptwriters and more, but the most telling of these many job listings is for a temporary community manager, who will “help promote a highly-anticipated Triple-A game”, and present live demonstrations of gameplay.
This is more revealing than it might seem, because to hire the position “temporarily” means that they must have something ready to show in the near future, otherwise they wouldn’t keep a temporary figure on the payroll. Granted, in the games industry it tends to take several months before these positions are filled, something Rocksteady might be banking on, but all the same, that could mean we might know what this game is by early next year.
Also, many of the positions are far older, having been open for the past couple months. Which means they’ve probably been in development for a while now, which would put even more emphasis on the whole “it’s coming soon” idea.
As for what this highly-anticipated triple-A game could be? Anyone’s guess. A new Batman game isn’t out of the picture - in fact, it seems likely, given how the scriptwriter positions require a knowledge of comic books... but I’d like to see what they could do with a new IP.
I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.
