RockStar to Stop Supporting Xbox 360 and PS3 Versions of GTA Online

Many tears were shed.

It’s inevitable that all old consoles suffer a slow death--the question we just have to ask ourselves is how slow it’ll be. The PS2 and the Wii had some pretty dang slow deaths, considering, and I have to say I’m surprised the PS3 and Xbox 360 have lasted as long as they have, but all things have to end eventually and Rockstar Games is pulling the plug on the last generation. Kind of.

Freemode events, the next big free update for GTA Online, will be hitting soon--but not for the Xbox 360 or PS3. Those consoles have officially hit their limit, and while Rockstar won’t be taking down the servers or anything, they have announced today that they’re done providing them with content--the way the game runs now is how it’ll run as long as they host players.

"As we mentioned previously, we always knew there might be a point where we would reach the technical capacity of what the older generation of consoles can handle as each downloadable update requires additional memory both for assets and for additional scripting. We have continued to optimize the entire game over time in order to squeeze as much memory as we possibly could out of the last-generation hardware and at some point, continuing to add content for those systems could cause the risk of instability to the game overall."

So if you want to experience Freemode events, and whatever comes next, you need to either upgrade your console or move to the PC. Sad news, for sure, but then we don’t mourn the lack of Sega CD content, so trust me: the pain will grow numb soon. Or you could just play GTA IV. No online mode but at least the story was better. Except… all the side-missions with your cousin, or… screw it, just play San Andreas again.
