Rocket League Goes Free-to-Play on the Epic Games Store

Later this summer, it finally goes down.

Over a year ago – ugh – Epic Games made the big-dick play of buying out Psyonix, the folks behind Rocket League, and announced their eventual plan to re-launch the game as an Epic Games Store exclusive.

Well, after a year and some change, that’s finally happening: later this summer, Rocket League is departing from Steam and moving onto the Epic Game Store, where it’ll drop its $20 price tag and switch to a free-to-play economy.

But don’t panic. For one, if you already own Rocket League on Steam, you can keep playing it there. You won’t have to swap over to the Epic Game store client to boot it up, and all your progress will save. Additionally, every paid player who’s still around when the free-to-play update drops will get a fairly sweet swag-bag of stuff to compensate for the lost twenty bucks:
  • All Rocket League-branded DLC released before free to play
  • "Est. 20XX" title that displays the year when the player first started playing Rocket League
  • 200+ Common items upgraded to "Legacy" quality
  • Golden Cosmos Boost
  • Dieci-Oro Wheels
  • Huntress Player Banner
And if you played it before today – that is to say, if you bought the game before this announcement was made – you also get the Faded Cosmos boost.

Finally, Epic Games is assuring people that there will be full cross-play between Epic Games, Steam, and the console versions of the game. Which should ease any and all concerns this announcement might have triggered in ya.

Granted, the outrage against the issue of Epic Games exclusivity has rarely been logical. The closest I could think of “warranted” outrage was against Metro: Last Light and Ooblets, at least at first, before people started sending all those death threats about it.

In any case, maybe we’ll be lucky and folks will be cool about this for once.
