Roblox Receives Over $92 Million in Investor Funding

Who knew blocks could be so profitable.

So this is something that I never would've imagined. Roblox honestly isn't a game that I'm entirely familiar with. The name definitely rings a bell, but I don't believe I've ever played it before. At first glance, it honestly looks pretty similar to Minecraft in my opinion, but I'm sure that's just my incredibly uneducated opinion.

Roblox is a user-generated massively multiplayer online social game. Although it may bear a resemblance to Minecraft simply because of the fact it has blocks, it actually was released before Minecraft. Besides my general lack of interest in the game, it apparently has a fairly large and consistently growing player base. In fact, about three months ago, Roblox gloated about its 30 million active monthly players, and at the time of publication, that number has skyrocketed to 48 million. That is definitely impressive, and way more than I would imagine for a game of this caliber.

Recently, this 11-year-old free-to-play, and still very much prospering game has received over $92 million from a round of investing led by Index Ventures and Meritech Capital Funding. For a decade old game, it's profitability and sustainable community is definitely impressive at the least. Roblox Corporation CEO David Baszucki recently talked to Forbes, explaining that the company is still very profitable (clearly), but that they wanted to strengthen "the balance sheet" going forward.

Baszucki also talks about their goal with Roblox, explaining that they are creating an imaginative platform for kids all around the world to play with; "the ultimate platform for play" as he calls it. It definitely makes sense that young children would be the main target consumer for Roblox, and hey, if I was younger, it would probably appeal to me too.
