Rivals of Aether, the popular 2D fighting game with a percentage style akin to Super Smash Bros, has announced a new character to be released in the upcoming days. The announcement was from GT-X 2017, a fighting game convention held in Salt Lake City.

The video shows a young female lion (I think) named Clairen. Her Kingdom of Fire has been overtaken by a tyrannical emperor, and her last chance at saving it will be by traveling back in time, where she enters the fray of the other Rivals of Aether battle animals.

Game wise, Clairen has a swordsman battle style, floating and dancing effortlessly on the ground or in the air. Her sword range isn't as long as one would expect, so spacing games are going to be less critical to her gameplay. It's in her fluid motion that victory lies.

This is my favorite kind of character reveal. It contains equal parts lore, ascetically pleasing art, and gameplay capabilities. In the end, the viewer knows more about not only how to play her, but who she is.

Back in August the premiered an upcoming frog monk named Ranno. Both Ranno and Clairen will be released for Rivals of Aether on Steam this October 17th.

You can find Rivals of Aether on the Steam Store for $15. You can watch the character reveal trailer for your self below.
