Riot Games Reveals VALORANT, their New FPS

It looks familiar.

Last October, Riot Games had a big ol' shindig celebrating their 10th anniversary, and revealed a whole bunch of junk in the process. Most of it was related to the only game they’re known for, League of Legends, but one game, called Project A, was also revealed, which was an FPS set in a different universe than the Runeterra we know and… know. Riot wasn’t forthcoming with details, but the trailer looked like Overwatch, if it were boring.

Well, now we’ve got a brand-new trailer and a host of new information, and now we know my previous description was slightly off: Project A, now known as Valorant, isn’t just Overwatch if it were boring – it’s Overwatch if it were Counter-Strike.

Here’s a little bit more information pulled straight from the press release:

VALORANT is a free-to-play game of precise skill, high stakes, lethal gameplay, and clutch moments that rewards creative gameplay styles. VALORANT pits two teams of five players against each other to win a round-based, attackers vs defenders, best-of-24-rounds gunfight.

In VALORANT, players choose from a diverse cast of hypernatural, battle-ready agents from real-world cultures and locations, each bringing a set of unique abilities that complement gunplay through tactical information and strategic support, changing the way players approach a situation. Abilities are designed to create tactical opportunities for players to take the right shot.

“Hypernatural.” I hate the word already. Anyway, it may seem like the game would be a long ways off, but apparently we’ll be getting our hands on it sometime in the summer of this very year. It’ll unlikely be the full release – more likely, it’ll be an open (or even closed) beta – but it’ll be a whole lot better than the two-minute clip we see above.

Hopefully they’ll use the innervating time to realize that “hypernatural” is a dumb, dumb word.
