Mildly unfortunate news for those waiting for the upcoming sci-fi horror game Returnal: the games release has been pushed back until the end of April.

According to a post on the official PlayStation Twitter account, Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Housemarque have decided to push the release date back. Originally set for release on March 19, 2021, it will now release on April 30, 2021 instead.

Update: Returnal has a new release date of April 30, 2021. SIE and Housemarque have made the decision to move the release date in order to give the team extra time to continue to polish the game to the level of quality players expect from Housemarque.

See you in April!

As mentioned, the main reason given for the delay was for additional development polish. This is a wise choice, after the most anticipated game of 2020 was deemed a technical disaster by the community for releasing in a buggy, unstable state (yes, were talking about Cyberpunk).

Revealed last June in a PlayStation live stream, Returnal is a third person shooter game. Set in an unfamiliar alien planet, protagonist space pilot Selene has to navigate a hostile environment that seems to be constantly changing. To complicate matters further, Selene appears to be stuck in a time loop of sorts, resurrecting back at the beginning of her struggle whenever she dies. Thats the fancy, narrative way of saying its a roguelike game, too.

Returnal looks like a lot of fun. While we look forward to playing, we completely understand the decision to delay it. At least its only by a month and a half. Returnal will be available on PlayStation 5 on April 30, 2021.
