Respawn Still Isn't Working on a Titanfall 3

Easily the worst news of 2020.

Respawn Entertainment, perhaps the only developer to do well under EA’s leadership, has been riding high on the recent successes of Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. And to celebrate their recently tenth anniversary, they put out this video…

…with this caption:

May 2020 marks the 10 year anniversary of Respawn Entertainment. Celebrate the legacy of the studio through the years, from their first title, Titanfall, in 2014 to the launch of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in 2019 and beyond to Apex Legends’ continued live service content. The video also includes a small glimpse into what Respawn has coming next with the launch Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond (VR) later this year.

You’ll notice that the video heavily focuses on Titanfall, to a noticeable (but not extreme) degree more than the other properties in Respawn’s library. This has gotten some people to rather eagerly wonder if this is a subtle sign that more Titanfall is coming in the future. These feelings were exaggerated when Respawn boss Vince Zampella commented on how important Titanfall was to Respawn, and how much everyone on the team loved the series.

Unfortunately, talking to IGN, Mr. Zampella had to clarify to fans and journalists alike that despite his words, no new Titanfall is on the way:

"There's nothing currently in development, but it's always there. You see the little bits of stuff coming back [through the lore in Apex Legends]. At some point, I would personally like to see some kind of resurrection there. We'll see if I can make that happen."

Titanfall 2 was really good – like, really good – but unfortunately most gamers (including myself, until it was free on the PSN) slept on it, meaning it didn’t sell nearly as well as it should have. Given that’s the case, it’s hardly a surprise they would focus on the franchises they know do well: specifically, Apex Legends and Star Wars.

Sad, but not a surprise.
