It appears that Capcom is on something of a remastering spree as of late, particularly for Resident Evil. Not only has the original game very recently been given an HD remake, but Resident Evil 4 has also received an HD remake last year. Well, now it’s time for Resident Evil: Zero to receive its HD remake, because if there’s one thing Capcom is more than willing to do, it’s to bring back the dead—again, and again, and again, and again.
Get it? 'Cuz zombies? Damn I’m clever.
Point is, Capcom has just announced that Resident Evil: Zero is coming, and boy is it remastered to boot. The game follows convict Billy Coen and officer Rebecca Chambers as they investigate a series of murders, and then the inevitable outbreak of zombification that strikes Raccoon city. The game has pretty standard reviews as Resident Evil games go, with critics praising the “partner zapping” system (resurfaced in Resident Evil: Revelations 2) and the puzzles, while taking issue with monster design and what’s called a “lame” plot.
This isn’t the first time this game has been remade: while originally released for the Gamecube in 2002, it received a Wii edition back in 2009, with moderate success. One would think that would make the Wii U a prime candidate to receive this HD remake, but one would be wrong, apparently: rather, it’ll be coming out for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC sometime in 2016. But only in Japan. There’s no word so far on a North American release.
Well, another loss for the Wii U, I guess, but otherwise, this is pretty neat. I’m not sure what’s prompted this wave of Resident Evil remakes, but hopefully it’s not distracting Capcom from… you know… making new games.
I imagine we’ll hear more about this remake as we close in on 2016.
