Resident Evil 7 has been released, and people love it. It’s gotten critical acclaim, high reviews, and according to a new statistic, it’s doing pretty well on the marketplace as well. While there’s still a lot we don’t know, what we can be sure of is that Capcom has shipped off 2.5 million copies of the game so far, which pushes the entire series up to 75 million copies shipped.
It sounds super impressive, and it is, but it comes with two caveats: the first is that units shipped are just how many copies Capcom has sent to retailers, it’s no indication of how many sales there have actually been. The second is that Capcom themselves are unimpressed with this number, and say they’re looking to sell 4 million by the end of March. So while they still have some time to hit that goal, they could still, theoretically, have a long ways to go.
Especially since games don’t typically sell as well after their first few days on store shelves. Granted, horror games might be a little different, given how many people like watching lets plays and the like before taking the final plunge, but who knows? Given how well the game’s been doing otherwise, I’d love to see Capcom’s relative boldness be rewarded.
So fingers crossed for ya, Capcom.
