The NX, Nintendo’s latest and hopefully greatest entry into the console rat race, is getting close to release--according to a new report by the Wall Street Journal anyway. According to them, an unnamed source has come forward saying Nintendo has just shipped NX development kits to several developers, so they can begin work on making games for the upcoming console.
According to this unnamed source, the NX comes with ‘industry leading chips’, to make it more competitive with the PS4 and Xbox One, and has a bigger emphasis on both hardcore gaming and mobile gaming, paradoxically. The report claims that the console will ship with a mobile unit that can either be used together with the console or as a separate unit entirely.
That’s kind of what the Wii U’s Gamepad was supposed to be, since it could play games by itself if the TV was otherwise occupied, but a short battery life and a strong dependence on proximity of the Wii U itself made that less-than-practical. But this, from what little we know, almost sounds like the PS4 if it were shipped with the Vita.
Unfortunately, I very much doubt we’ll be hearing anything more concrete than this until Nintendo finally opens up about the device, so we’ll just have to hang on tight for more info.
