Rainbow Six: Siege Won't Have New Modes, but New Operators

And new maps, maybe.

Ubisoft announced a while back that they’d be dramatically changing the way they approach paid content in their games: now, gameplay-affecting elements such as maps and modes will be released for free, while (in theory) cosmetics and other non-essentials will be the only thing locked behind paywalls. It’s a nice idea, and has been demonstrated in games like For Honor (which, so far, looks pretty promising), but what about Ubisoft’s past release, like, say, picking one randomly… Rainbow Six Siege? When can we expect free new modes for that game?

According to Creative director Xavier Marqui in an interview with PC Gamer, the answer is “never”.

An answer which Brand director Alexandre Remy elaborated on.

"We concluded that there are some foundations to Siege that we want to keep: attack versus defense, destruction, operators, and [only having] one life. That is the DNA of the game, so when you look at what game modes would sufficiently refresh the experience but remain faithful to those rules, there's not that many. Siege is its own game mode."

But don’t worry, there’ll still be new features: namely, as the years go on, we’ll be getting new Operators as DLC: at least 50 this year, with the end goal being around one-hundred.

“That was one of the questions that was asked by management here, weren't we going to be doing the same operators over and over again? But the idea is that you actually want enough operators so that each pick you have a choice. Thermite for a long time was not a choice, everyone had to pick him in a team because he was the only one who could breach into a reinforced wall. Introducing Hibana, all of a sudden the player could perform that task with a choice. At that moment every choice is tough choice for the player and not an obvious one. To come to that moment, you need a minimum of 50. When we have 50, that'll be when the game is at its peak in terms of strategy."

So they want to turn it into a MOBA, huh? Alright, I can dig it. At least the new maps will be free, right?
