Rainbow Six Siege to Hand Out Bans for Toxicity

Don't be a jerk.

Online games are toxic, and every single company who makes multiplayer games will have to contend with that sooner or later; even high-and-mighty Blizzard was forced to acknowledge that humans are trash and actually implement proper reporting tools with the launch of Overwatch. And now Ubisoft is following suit by slapping on its hazmat gear so it can wade into the worst of the Rainbow Six community and start handing out bans.

Starting next week, we will be implementing an improvement on the system we have been using to ban players that use racial and homophobic slurs, or hate speech, in game. The bans for this will fall within the following durations, depending on severity:

  • 2 Days
  • 7 Days
  • 15 Days
  • Permanent
We will be tracking the frequency at which language that violates the Code of Conduct is used by individual players, and will apply the appropriate ban on a case-by-case basis.
The type of language we will be taking action against is outlined in the following section of the Code of Conduct:

Any language or content deemed illegal, dangerous, threatening, abusive, obscene, vulgar, defamatory, hateful, racist, sexist, ethically offensive or constituting harassment is forbidden.

Ubisoft was quick to point out that simple trash-talk wont warrant any kind of ban. Some degree of swear words or general angry muttering is tolerable. These bansparticularly the permanent onewill focus pretty exclusively on the people who take it too far, or the people who actually threaten physical violence and the like. Which is good: with cases like these its far safer to be conservative than over-crusading. Particularly since the threat of a ban isnt usually enough to deter the people who are just caught up in emotion, the way games are often want to do.

I, for one, look forward to the change.
