To whet your whistle, start off with this, the first gameplay trailer ever for the game. It's a full 6 minutes of intimidation, badassery, and demon demolishing. Taking place on the moon Phobos, the Doom Slayer now has to handle corporate workers, as well as wretched monsters. This gives us a beautiful taste of what kind of first impression the game will leave us with.
With it, we notice a few new features. The first is a quick sliding motion. The player appears to be able to quickly dash forward, sideways, and presumably backward. This new motion should allow for more fluid dodging of enemies and attacks.
The Doom Slayer appears to now have a grappling hook, which they can use to launch themselves into the direction of whatever demon unlucky enough to have been caught by it. We notice new enemies and demons not present in the 2016 game. And what a better way to slaughter these monsters than with a new energy sword option?
What the Trailer Didn't Show
You don't always have to be the Doom Slayer. Instead, players can enter another player's campaign in the form of a demon, to aid in taking the main slayer down. In this new mode, called Invasions, demon players can even team up to take on the protagonist as a team.
Nintendo fans won't be missing out on this launch. Doom Eternal will also be releasing on Nintendo Switch alongside PC and the other consoles. Panic Button appears to be handling the port again, as they did with the Doom 2016. This news didn't actually appear at QuakeCon, but as a press statement by Bethesda.
According to an interview with Polygon, game director Marty Stratton assures players that there will indeed be single player DLC post launch.
Absolutely.
. . .
Honestly, if theres one thing that I would like to go back and do different is to give people more of the [Doom] campaign post-launch. You know, more follow-up DLC from a campaign perspective. So were already planning that and Im looking forward to it. Well talk about our whole plan.
Doom Eternal certainly looks like it will be able to carry the blood-drenched torch from id Software's success two years ago.
